Larimer County residents who subscribe to Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Cricket wireless service can now text-to-9-1-1 as part of a new service in launched in Larimer County today. 

All dispatch centers in Larimer County are currently equipped to receive and handle text-to-9-1-1 calls.

Text-to-9-1-1 will be very useful to those who are hard of hearing, deaf, or speech-impaired. Text-to-9-1-1 could also help in situations when a caller is facing domestic abuse; the caller is injured and cannot speak; the caller is in a remote location and can only send out a text message; or other scenarios where a text message may be the only way to reach out for help. 

Officials with Larimer Emergency Telephone Authority stress "Call if You Can; Text if You Must." 

How To Text To 911 

To send a text message to 911, simply compose a text to 911. 

  • The first text message to 9-1-1 should be brief and contain the location of the emergency and type of help needed. 
  • Be prepared to answer questions and follow instructions from the 9-1-1 dispatcher
  • Text in simple words – do not use abbreviations
  • Keep text messages brief and concise


The service does not work on services such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype, or Google Voice. It only works with subscribers who use the carriers listed above. 

In addition, the service only works in Larimer County at this time. If you send a text message to 9-1-1 outside of Larimer County and that area does not currently receive text messages, you will receive a message indicating that texting 9-1-1 is not available.

Video and photo can not be processed by the Text-To-9-1-1 applications at this time.
