Guns N' Roses was "the poster child for dysfunction and chaos."

That comes directly from Slash.  The band was notorious for the old "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" cliche.  Slash, in particular, lived that lifestyle as much as any other rock star.

But, he cleaned up his act a few years ago.

In an interview with BBC 6 Music, Slash recalls the first time he played sober on stage.  It was 2006, which was more than 20 years after he started with Guns N' Roses.

Velvet Revolver, the band Slash was in at the time, had a short California tour scheduled while their lead guitarist was in rehab.

Slash explains:

"I left rehab and went out and did this tour, and it was the first time I'd been on stage sober — ever.  That was a trip and it was a little shaky, but you get past that pretty quickly. Because you're in the moment – you can't just sit there and go, 'Oh my God, I can't do this.' You have to do it. So I got over that pretty quickly."

Slash will release his third solo album in September.
