Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora left the band in the middle of a tour in 2013.  At the time, "personal reasons" was the given explanation.

But, since Sambora's depature, it has become clear that there is a "family drama" between Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi.  But, Sambora says a lot of the information that has surfaced on the subject is inaccurate.

In an interview with Lust For Life, Sambora sheds light on exactly what happened.  The guitarist explains:

"I just wanted calmer waters, and just do something for myself. But the Bon Jovi machine was on. I said I wanted a break. We had just finished with another tour … I saw a year of other priorities for me. I wanted to make my own music, and preferred doing a few shows with my own band. That was just not accepted."

Sambora continues, "I could choose — join or leave. That’s hard when you share joys and sorrows for 30 years."

Richie Sambora does say he could return to Bon Jovi.  But, it sounds like he'd prefer an easier schedule.  He's been creating new music and is currently on a small, European tour.  Sambora says, "Not a tour of 14 months in more than 50 countries.  Just a nice tour, playing music then being home for a while."
